What happens if you do not renew first rights

Edited

Overview

If your first-rights window closes without you claiming, the sponsorship loses its hold and goes back on the public storefront. Anyone can buy it, including a competitor. This article explains the timeline and what your options are after.

Before you start

  • Reminder emails go out a few times during the window. Check your spam folder if you haven't seen any.

  • Once a sponsorship is sold to someone else, that's final for the year.

Step-by-step

  1. Your window opens — usually 2 to 6 weeks before the public sale, set by the chamber.

  2. You receive reminder emails as the window narrows.

  3. If the window closes without action, the item moves to Expired in My First Rights and reappears on the storefront.

  4. You can still try to buy it from the public listing — but it's first-come, first-served at that point.

  5. You retain renewal eligibility for any other sponsorships still in their window.

Tips & best practices

  • Calendar the close date the moment your window opens.

  • If you're undecided, talk to the chamber. They sometimes flex deadlines for good-faith conversations.

  • If a competitor scoops it up, you can still buy a different tier or another event's sponsorship to keep visibility.

FAQ

Will I lose first rights forever?
No — only for that specific sponsorship in this cycle. Future sponsorships you buy can earn fresh first rights.

Can the chamber reinstate my window?
Sometimes. Ask politely and quickly.

What if I never received the reminder emails?
Check spam, and see the not-receiving-emails troubleshooting article. Your responsibility is the same regardless of email delivery.
