Member roles explained

Edited

Overview

Roles determine what each member can do in Chamberly. There are chamber-level roles (org_manager, chamber_staff) and sponsor-level roles (sponsor, business_admin, business_purchaser, business_viewer). Picking the right role keeps your data and operations safe.

Before you start

  • Understand the difference between chamber staff (you) and sponsors (your members).

  • Know whether the new member will purchase, manage, or just view content.

Step-by-step

  1. org_manager: Full chamber admin. Can do anything, including billing.

  2. chamber_staff: Limited admin. Can manage events, orders, and members but not billing or chamber-wide settings.

  3. sponsor: Standard buyer account. Can browse the shop, purchase sponsorships, and manage their own profile.

  4. business_admin: Sponsor-side admin for a business record. Can manage representatives and purchase on behalf of the business.

  5. business_purchaser: Can purchase on behalf of the business but cannot edit reps.

  6. business_viewer: Read-only access to the business record. Useful for stakeholders.

Tips & best practices

  • Default new chamber team members to chamber_staff and promote to org_manager only when needed.

  • Use business_viewer for executives who want visibility without operational risk.

  • Audit roles annually to remove access for staff who have changed roles.

  • Pair roles with the principle of least privilege — only grant what's strictly needed.
