Using merge tag variables

Edited

Overview

Merge tags pull dynamic data into your emails — the recipient’s first name, the order number, your chamber’s phone number, and more. They make every email feel personal and contextual without manual editing.

Before you start

  • Make sure recipient profiles have first names filled in. Empty fields render empty.

  • Confirm your chamber settings (org email, org phone) are filled under Settings > General.

Step-by-step

  1. In any Text or Button block, click the merge tag icon in the toolbar.

  2. Select a tag to insert. Available tags include: {site_name}, {user_first_name}, {order_number}, {product_list}, {order_total}, {account_url}, {dashboard_url}, {company_name}, {event_title}, {org_email}, {org_phone}.

  3. Save the template.

  4. Click Send test — the email previews with sample merge data.

  5. Send to a real recipient and confirm the values render correctly.

Tips & best practices

  • Use {user_first_name} in subject lines for a 10–20% open-rate lift.

  • {product_list} is great in Order Confirmation but doesn’t belong in marketing emails.

  • Always provide a fallback in the surrounding copy so the email reads naturally if a tag is empty (e.g., “Hi there,” instead of “Hi {user_first_name},”).

FAQ

What if a merge tag has no value?
It renders empty. The surrounding copy stays intact, so write defensively.

Can I create custom merge tags?
Not currently. The built-in set covers the most common chamber, sponsor, and order data.
